Kapoor and SonsAt the outset, Kapoor and Sons is a simple story of a dysfunctional family aptly headed by the evergreen loverboy of the Bollywood- Kapoor clan: Rishi Kapoor. He plays Daddu, a retired armyman with an obsession for Mandakini from RTGM and gradually graduates to online porn. Though he plays a soon to be nonagenarian, he still retains his ‘Bobby’ charm and acts with effortless ease inspite of donning a makeup that must have required him atleast a couple of hours to apply.

The simple drama has a lot of layers though in the complicated relationships that it encompasses. Whether it is the mother- Sunita’s (Ratna Pathak Shahs) relationship with her two sons -Arjun (Siddharth Malhotra) and Rahul (Fawaad Khan) or her husband- Harsh (Rajat Kapoor) the equations and the power within the family constantly keep shifting. The director – Shakun Batra- handles this confusion with much proficiency and gives us a once in a while superlative family drama. Moreover the ebullient Tia aptly played by Alia Bhat belies the dumbness that she is usually associated with and brings out an intelligent actor.

This is an actor’s movie all the way- Fawaad handles his character flawlessly while Siddharth successfully restrains himself from the usual flamboyant characters that he is used to playing.  Not to forget, both are absolute eye candy while Alia makes a man feel protective. The movie has a lots of ups and downs and one major shock incident that changes its course. Shakun’s scripting and direction are at their best- no predictable scenes though the story has its moments of dejavu. Camera captures the emotions and moves with an artistic breeze.Other than ‘Kar Gayi Chull’, none of the songs impress.

Infact, Rishi Kapoor is the sole reason that you end up ROFL and wish you could be as much fun as Mr. Kapoor in your geriatric days. With junior RK’s movies not doing too well recently, one wonders if the RK father and son duo ends up like the AB duo! Keep guessing!!
